trendy trendy

Trends. This is basically a fashion buzz-word. Pink is the new black, black is the new white, jodhpurs are in in in, you get the idea. I get a lot of fashion magazines in the mail and enjoyably follow a lot of fashion blogs but I have to say that I’m not really much of a trend girl. Coworkers and friends have told me that I’m “trendy” but I really have no idea what that means, in general I think it means that I wear some pretty weird shit sometimes and get away with it because of my profession (graphic artist- I’m not a lady of the night or anything, if that’s what you were thinking) and people say “trendy” to seem nicer than telling me I look like a circus escapee. Sometimes when I show my sister something she’ll dismiss it with a “nice, but it’s SO Chloe 2006.” What? Let’s be honest people. I have neither the memory capacity or salary capacity to follow trends. I usually just wear whatever the hell amuses me and doesn’t destroy my credit card bill. It doesn’t embarrass me to wear last last last last season’s shoes or whatever. I’ve noticed, however, a couple of “trends” this season (or maybe last season.. or maybe I’m just super far behind… dammit people I am really not hip or observant enough to keep up with stuff) that confound the hell out of me.

I don’t think I’ve worn one of these ever, though I vaguely remember my sister and I may have had matching jumpsuits at some point when I was 4 or 5, and given that was 20 or so years ago, I’m not really capable of remembering the specifics. Ok I am going to be a little bit TMI here. There’s really no way to get out of one of these without taking the whole thing off, so if you’ve popped one of these on for a night out and you’ve had a little too much to drink, how on earth do you go to the bathroom? Maybe because I don’t own any of these there’s a secret that jumpsuit owners know that I don’t; if there is, feel free to leave it in a comment as I’m dying to know. A friend told me it’s just like wearing a swimsuit onesie, but I’m a bikini girl and have never encountered any problems while wearing a swimsuit when nature calls, so, you know, I dunno.

I’ll get behind (and into) some pretty strange, uncomfortable, hard to walk in boots but honestly these just go beyond my comfort zone. It’s already enough of an effort in some shoes to walk around without falling on my ass but not being able to really move my knees seems like it’d post more problems than they’re worth. Also I am genuinely curious, how do you sit down? I also imagine it can’t be too sexy to have your boyfriend or sig other remove these as it’d involve an unnecessary, probably awkward, and possibly tiring amount of pulling. Sadly I do think about these things, if only out of, you know, consideration and such, and also because I hate anything that takes too much trouble to disrobe out of in private twosome moments.

You’d think I’d be on board for these because bellydance is one of my hobbies. Maybe it’s because I’m only like, 5’2″ and already know there’s no chance in hell these would look remotely good on me, but I don’t think I’ve seen these look flattering on ANYONE when just walking around on the street. No offense if you wear harlem pants, maybe they work for you, but if a 6 foot 5 model looks like she’s kind of wearing 2 strangely wrapped bags on her legs, chances are you’re not much better off. If you’re bellydancing and moving the fabric around and have it paired with a fancy bralette ensemble (ie a dance COSTUME) it looks fine, but if you’re just hanging out or walking down the street I’m probably wondering why you made the decisions in life you did.

I have pretty extreme opinions when it comes to certain things or items of fashion but it really is a your mileage may vary kind of thing, which is what fashion and dressing yourself really is. If any of these items work for you, more power to you! Personally though I know I’d look pretty terrible wearing them which is what largely formed my opinion. Sometimes I feel like I have to be careful about sharing my opinion though; when I was living in Japan I once totally went off on how much I hated the crop tailored work shorts culotte trend and how everyone was wearing them only to have the sweet Japanese friend I was with later embarrassedly remove her trench to reveal that she was wearing the very item of clothing I’d been ridiculing over lunch. I felt like a total tool for the rest of the afternoon.  So take my rantings with a grain of salt. If you love ’em, love ’em! If you don’t, well, like me, you’re certainly entitled to your opinion.

too tired for this nonsense

hairclips & necklace: f21
tshirt: club monaco
miniskirt: american apparel
tights: uniqlo
boots: jeffrey campbell
jacket: DIY chain nonsense

just a friday night meet the friends at the pub for a brew (pub in question being korean, brew being various flavoured sojus) thrown together kind of thing after an exhausting week. i can’t tell you how much i love this jacket. more pics later. it’s long asymmetrical hoodie that i picked up at urban outfitters for like, 10 bucks in the sale section, and then sewed about 30 or 40 bucks worth of fine sterling silver chains and tiny rose buttons onto after seeing emanuel ungaro’s insane cashmere hoodie. i get comments on it everywhere i go, mostly to the tune of “i love your jacket, but i’m afraid it’d snag on everything!” …for the record, the chains do come out sometimes, but i can just sew them back in when i get home. i kind of feel like it could stand for more chains and maybe some reflective mirror buttons, so i’ll probably continue adding to it later.

meteor showers

There’s a meteor shower going on right now. I am mathematically convinced it’s contributed to what has been a high state of crazy as far as my moods have been. When in doubt, blame anger problems on SPACE. Maybe these delicious new Frye boots knew all of this was coming.

First spied this in Anthropologie’s latest catalogue when it found its way to my mailbox and was surprised at how floored I was. I used to be a full-on Anthropologie girl back when I was an overly young schoolteacher, and then a naive gallerina. I would literally walk from my job as an art gallery director down to the metro everyday to go home and pass Anthropologie on the way and duck in EVERY day to see what had been added to the mark-downs section. Since then my style (..and.. well.. personality maybe but let’s not go into that today) has shifted from sweet soft ruffled poet to bitchy existential rocker-wannabe, so I’m more TopShop/Preen/Burberry Prosum/vintage than I am Anthro these days. However, was totally blown away by the scattering of tiny studs all the way down the back of these beautifully structured boots. I am however not as enraptured with the $428 price tag, so I’m going to keep a look out for a good pair of vintage boots to self stud. Sometimes a girl needs to bring the meteor shower with her.

maybe i’m dreaming

It’s turning out to be one of those work weeks, the ones where you get off work at 9 pm and there are still people at the office making you feel like a total slacker to be leaving as early as 9 pm and all you want to do is get in your car and drive, just drive, keep driving, don’t stop driving. I’ve been listening to music geared to keeping me sane, and Owl City’s romantic, delicately tempered Postal Service-esque electronica has been doing a pretty good job of keeping my head above the water. My favourite line of this song: To my motion fatigue- farewell

In other news, I’ve been slogging through the absolute hell that is finding a good dress to wear to a couple upcoming weddings. I really don’t wear dresses that often and the ones I have tend to be casual or a bit sporty or frankly kind of weird so I’m bamboozled when it comes to proper event dressing. Too many factors: price range, appropriateness (nothing I wouldn’t be afraid to wear in front of a friend’s grandmother), colour, cut, whether it can transition from day to night, nothing bridesmaidy, nothing that could detract attention from the bride, nothing too boring, something that still has enough of your own style in it, uuugh. So far the search has yielded a lot of near hits but mostly misses; I’m being very picky and  horribly stubborn in my thinking that if I’ve been invited to share a friend’s special day I should at least look nice (…but not TOO nice… you get the point…) Aaaaaaghhhh…. is it the weekend yet? City fun, volunteering with disabled kids, kites, and a bento picnic await me…

shine a little light on me

How many silly faces can I make at the camera?

Top | F21
Skirt | Luxluxlux
Jacket | Blake + DIY studding
Shoes  | Oasis cut-out boots
Necklace | F21
Bracelets |  Zipper bangles (one of the zipper pulls fell off during a party…)
Bag | Vintage

Yet another weekend of fun: flurried happy cooking, sunburn, dance,  karaoke failure, vodka, and inappropriately placed pockets of unexpected sleep. My moodiness these days rolls around and around like a marble in a glass jar in the back of a moving car. I still don’t know where this life of mine is going but I’m always enjoying the ride. Loving these summer days.

dream shoes, true dream shoes

An ocean of sighs. Don’t think I’ve forgotten about you, Isabel Marant studded boots. Since I first clapped eyes on you weeks ago I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you. But I’d always assumed it was going to be doomed, unrequited love withstanding a sudden whirlwind trip to Paris: Marant goods are notoriously hard to get ahold of in the US; moreover, this very exclusive French designer doesn’t really allow her clothing and accessories to be sold online. However, I heard a rumour recently that several Marant pieces will be more available in the US soon at Barneys. Praying these ridiculously delicious, completely unnecessary (in practical terms; maybe I’ll wear them to hiphop dance class or something) boots make the cut. Be still my dreaming heart!

I’ve a fatal weakness for the very lovely French language and apparently so does Japanese band mondialito. Composer Toshiya Fueoka met vocalist Junko in 2002 and mondialito was born. Boosting delicate vocals sung entirely in French, the gently acoustic electronica music has a certain special charm to it. Junko now lives in Paris (don’t we all wish we did?), but the pair continue to make beautiful music together.

kimberly ovitz

Today’s massive fashion designer crush is Kimberly Ovitz. Having done stints at J. Crew, Chanel, Imitation of Christ, Ya Ya Clothing, and Twelth St by Cynthia Vincent, she launched her own line in Spring 2009. And she’s my age…! I’m head over heels for her gorgeously sophisticated, somewhat androgynous minimalist silhouettes.

Am also seriously considering these pieces from her inaugural Spring 2009 collection, though honestly, by the time I make up my mind, they probably won’t be in stock anymore. Which do you think is the most investment worthy? Am quietly leaning towards the insanely comfortable looking wrap jacket, but I have a terminal weakness for motorcycle jackets and unique pleating.

Honestly, I want all 3 pieces in a sad, terrible, my budget-can’t-support-it-and-I-just-paid-off-car-insurance kind of way. Technically I’m on shopping ban. Dance studio fees to pay, airplane tickets to buy… sigh. Check both of Kimberly Ovitz’s 2009 collections here.

motocross jeans

I’ve got a new rule for jean buying, which is pretty much that I can’t buy any new jeans unless they are somewhat unique (I have the same pair of Uniqlo skinnies in 3 different colours- though can you blame me, they’re as comfortable as leggings… even so, though…). Motocross jeans really fulfill this requirement; they aren’t too outrageous to wear everyday, but they’ve got that extra little bite to them.

I’m truly lusting after these slick Balmain motocross jeans but let’s face it, it’s gonna be a big fat NEVER in this lifetime that I spend nearly 2 grand on a pair of jeans. A bit of digging around rooted out a few pairs that are more up my alley as far as price range.

motocross2Will most definitely be keeping an eye out for these lovelies.

y hello thar topshop aw 2009

topshopaw2009Going to be keeping an eye out for a vintage purse, boots, and jacket I can DIY stud up in similar style. There’s something pretty ridiculous about that fluffy leather jacket, but I also kind of love it- a little theatricality to keep you warm when the weather gets cold. Check out the rest of the Topshop AW 2009 collection here.
