Did you know Saturday was National Talk Like a Pirate Day? Well, I certainly did. Celebrated by going to the local Renaissance Festival during their pirate weekend. I even made this ridiculous get-up just for the occasion.

I’ve been wanting to do my own cut-out shirts for awhile now, so I did this one as practice and learned a lot about how I should be cutting the shapes, what drapes and how, etc. I sketched out the skull and crossbones on some scrap paper, then drew the design on with a wash away fabric marker (the pastelly kind). I cut away the design with fabric scissors, then applied no fray liquid to all the edges. Once it had dried, I cut more precise lines into the now stiffer fabric at the edges. After, I sewed a layer of thin mesh beneath the holes (use a sewing machine, otherwise it’ll take too long if you’re doing it by hand, because you have to think about where the holes of the mesh are). As you can see, (or hopefully can’t), I cut the bones of the crossbones too wide, and they gaped downwards even after I’d sewed in the mesh layer. I ended up just safety pinning so that they were more of a bone shape and hoping that people would just think I was going for the punk look. I’m planning on doing a couple more of these (one with a spine on back/ribs in front, some other ideas I’m keeping under wraps for now), but if anyone would like a more detailed tutorial with pics, just let me know so that I can document the process whenever I attempt a project like this again..!

Red is a lucky colour for weddings in my culture and the dress is staggeringly comfortable- soft and wearable, and the ribbon that cinches below the chest is elastic (I’m a bit obsessed with it, to tell the truth; going to be using it to cinch up all sorts of tunic-y things I have lying around in my wardrobe). I should have gotten some pictures of this dress in motion because that’s where the true beauty lies; the ruffly bits in front and back are separate and when you move or dance or the wind picks them up they move around sort of dreamily. I have no idea why I look so pissed in the first picture. Maybe because the wedding was an outdoor ceremony in 100 degree heat. Still though, a delightful wedding and reception.

I’ve loved this jacket ever since I slipped it onto my shoulders in the French Connection store at Santa Monica Beach. Sure it’s a bit marching band, a bit Micheal Jackson. But it nips nicely at the waist and echoes faintly of that infamous Balmain jacket without being one of its myriad copies. I also love the weird tulip way this $5 vintage dress falls between the knees in front; a small treasure divulged from digging in the messy pit of one of San Diego’s Goodwill stores. I tried putting that fallen flower back onto the bush afterwards, as if it’d never fallen in the first place. I was not successful.

just a friday night meet the friends at the pub for a brew (pub in question being korean, brew being various flavoured sojus) thrown together kind of thing after an exhausting week. i can’t tell you how much i love this jacket. more pics later. it’s long asymmetrical hoodie that i picked up at urban outfitters for like, 10 bucks in the sale section, and then sewed about 30 or 40 bucks worth of fine sterling silver chains and tiny rose buttons onto after seeing emanuel ungaro’s insane cashmere hoodie. i get comments on it everywhere i go, mostly to the tune of “i love your jacket, but i’m afraid it’d snag on everything!” …for the record, the chains do come out sometimes, but i can just sew them back in when i get home. i kind of feel like it could stand for more chains and maybe some reflective mirror buttons, so i’ll probably continue adding to it later.

Yet another weekend of fun: flurried happy cooking, sunburn, dance, karaoke failure, vodka, and inappropriately placed pockets of unexpected sleep. My moodiness these days rolls around and around like a marble in a glass jar in the back of a moving car. I still don’t know where this life of mine is going but I’m always enjoying the ride. Loving these summer days.

I happened to be in New York City the day Kate Moss’s latest collection for Topshop dropped and went a little crazy shopping in Topshop for the first time. The only thing I picked up from her collection were these slightly rockerish grey eyelet jeans, but for whatever reason, never wore them until today; maybe there was a bit of that intimidation factor. Who doesn’t want to be Kate Moss? Who was I, this short little Asian chick, to dare to wear her jeans? In any case I finally sucked it up and threw them on. These things are skintight and clearly designed for someone much taller than myself, but surprisingly comfortable. Maybe it’s not so hard being Kate Moss after all.
